Hettich ROTINA 380 Featured in Biotechnology Study of Molasses
The University of Agronomical Sciences and Veterinary Medicine’s Scientific Bulletin published an issue entitled, “New Researches in Biotechnology.” Section IV discusses molasses’ influence on the efficiency of industrial biotechnological processes of producing yeast biomass. Hettich’s ROTINA 380 benchtop centrifuge was used to separate biomass from processed molasses samples in this study.
Yeast production requires carbohydrate feedstocks. Among the many carbohydrate feedstock options, molasses is the most economic choice, making it the standard growth medium for baking yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).
In order to evaluate the biomass yield, screened and identified processed molasses samples from sugar beet and sugar cane underwent fermentation for 55 hours, after which time the biomass levels were determined. The biomass was then separated by centrifugation using the Hettich ROTINA 380. Afterwards, the samples were put in 250 ml tubes and centrifuged for 20 minutes at 4,000 rpm.
Baking yeast is widely used for the production of single cell protein (SCP) for food and feed. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the prime fermenting yeast strain for its capability to act as a raising agent for dough and other products. Rapid growth and high biomass yield is a major requisite for commercial baker’s yeast. The study sought to assist in the development of technological solutions to be applied in industrial biotechnological processes, specifically for optimal molasses production. It concludes that the vitamin biotin is an ideal supplement to molasses for increased biomass yield.
