Hettich ROTIXA 50S Blood Bag Centrifuge Used in Influenza Epidemiology Research
The Hettich ROTIXA 50S blood bag centrifuge was cited in the study “Effect of Travel on Influenza Epidemiology,” published by the Center for Disease Control’s journal, Emerging Infectious Diseases. The study aimed to assess the effect of world travel on the attack and incident rates of influenza virus infections.
The study focused on short-term travel to tropical regions because of its high rates of illness. For their research, scientists examined 1,190 adults who traveled from the Netherlands to tropical and subtropical countries for a brief amount of time. Blood samples were taken from participants before and after travel.
Researchers used the Hettich ROTIXA 50S to centrifuge the blood samples at 3,000 rpm for 10 minutes for serologic testing.
Influenza virus infection was serologically confirmed in 15 travelers. Ultimately, the study concludes that “given the large number of travelers to (sub) tropical countries, travel-related infection most likely contributes to importation and further influenza spread worldwide.”
Hettich’s comprehensive line of centrifuges enables scientists to conduct important testing and research, such as this study on influenza virus infection rates and travel. The Hettich ROTIXA 50S is an advanced, high-throughput, floor-standing centrifuge ideal for blood bags and blood bank applications.
